Santa Cruz Xmas Jam and Grrrls Mini Ramp Jam

After some persuasion via text message from Becky Jaques, I decided to mission it from Peckham to deepest darkest Hertfordshire, and I'm not kidding either, black and icy it were! Stepping off the train at Hemel Hempstead, I was greeted by freezing temperatures and had to walk up to the XC over slippery paths and iced up puddles.

On arrival, I was greeted by Emma Richardson and Dannielle Gallacher, who sat cotching in the warm cafe/chill out area. The 'indoor' skatepark actually is kinda outside as it has one wall missing, so December temperatures easily reached us when skating. I then bumped into Helena who'd got there 15minutes earlier (I failed to meet her at Euston, being 4mins late for the train). She informed me that the bowls were slippery, which I later found out when I dropped in the pool an immediately slid out and ate shit!

Anyway, on entering the indoor park (which is overwelmingly, scarily, RAD!) I headed to the mini ramp whereby was met with shrieks and hugs from Becky. She immediately told me to get in there (the mini ramp) which despite it being a manic, snaking, free for all session, I did. Unfortunately, a sneeky guy named 'Socks' dropped in on me and made me roll my ankle! Gahh! I was well bummed out to say the least, and started to wich I hadn't come.
However, after some positive vibes from Becky, I stretched my foot a little bit and had a roll round the park. I came back to the mini a few minutes later, after realising I could forget about my ankle injury for a few hours and got stuck in with practicing some tricks (just 50-50s, axels stall, rock fakie). In the midst of that, I also did some filming, Ewen Bower, Lucy Adams and Helena all looking hot on the coping!

Anyway, the Jam got under way and I just got so fucking hyped! I was so excited, I just wanted to skate as much as possible, I hope I didn't snake anyone, if I did, sorry! 'Cos I was so hyped and shredding without a care in the world, I managed to get some good 50-50s and then... I learnt slash grinds... just like that! So stoked!

Ok that's enough about me. In between skating the Jam, I managed to do some filming, I tried my best to film everyone, some screenshots of which, you can see in the previous post. I will make an edit soon and post it up :)

Such a rad sesh on Sunday night, I'm sooo glad Becky made me came. Cheers for the interview, Becky (Brash 4 stuff!) and thanks Felix for helping me with the interview! It was raaad seeing everyone too, and meeting some of the girls I hadn't met before. Nice one!

'In Stock' exhibition and 'Stockwell Winter Games'

The second 'Out of Stockwell' project, the 'In Stock' exhibition and Stockwell Winter Games happend a few weeks ago. I have been part of the organising committee and ran a little Stall selling zines and t-shirts made by various Stockwell locals. Unfortunately, due to the stress of helping organise it and setting up shop, I did a pretty bad job of advertising it, however people still came and bought stuff. Big sellers were Lovenskate tees, Foxspot tees, Skateboard Religion hats, Jon Horner's skate comics and of course, Brash zine :)


I guess this little stall was an experiment and with the continual development of Out of Stockwell, I hope to run a 'pop up' shop whenever there is an 'Out of Stockwell' event.


Because of all the madness, I also forgot to bring my camera (I'm a bit hopeless really!) so didn't get any photographs of the event myself! Luckily, Johners was around and took this montage above, and Scott at Lizard in a Labcoat got some pics too. I will be back at the Queen's Head, as artwork is up indefinitely, to take some snaps sometime in the new year so watch this space for bloggage on that!

Hello, Skater Grrrl

I know I'm going crazy with all these video posts, but I do find them inspiring, and want to share them. Just knowing that the amount of girls within skateboarding isn't actually as few as I keep thinking. Will the scene eventually be more gender equal? I found this wicked photo montage video, by photographer Julian Bleeker of grrrls ripping, which have been put together in his book Hello, Skater Girl. Everything about this is rad, except the title. Gender is irrelevant, talent isn't.

Six Reasons why I haven't made a zine like this...

I used to make these tiny zines all the time and I haven't made one for ages. Got fed up writing my dissertation, am waaay behind on uni illustration project so thought fuck it all and made one of the 'classic' Alana slit zines. I will be photocopying it this week so if you see me around, badger me for one. Or get me to post you one. They're real bad (ass) y'know!

I had a table at South East London Zine fest over the weekend and the whole day was rad! Not only did my talk go well (will post more about that soon) I met a shed load of amazing people and I even managed to sell a few things! Brash 2 is nearly all gone now! Skateboard Religion Beanie

I just wanted to post about this hat I bought from Nik of Skateboard Religion today. Nik is a regular contributor to Brash, and since featuring him in issue 3, Skateboard Religion has taken off superbly with numerous skate edits from regular Sunday sessions and a second batch of t-shirts... and now hats! Perfect for this nasty weather that is slowly creeping over us with frosty mornings and short day. Brash at Brum Zine Fest at Supersonic

I managed to take a picture on the rare occasion that the table wasn't hidden amongst a sea of festival goers.

As well as being part of the Spectacle exhibiton at Supersonic, Birmingham Zine Festival had a table there, where Brash 3 was on sale, along with my Tonni Iommi and Ian Anderson prints. So stoekd for this oppotunity and I even made some money back...result!

Ladies Skateboard Series - Round one Manchester

Brash went upto Manchester over the weekend to get involved with the ladies comp! After travelling aaaages up the motorway with Jenna, Helen, and Lucy, and practicing some moves at Stoke Plaza, (where we met Georgie and Emma - both Brash interviewees!) we headed to Manchester Central skate park to get our shred on!

The grrrl take over at World Famous Central Skatepark was apprent with nail painting session in the Black Sheep skate shop and cup cakes a frenzy! I had none of that (well apart from the cupcakes of course!) and just wanted to skate skate skate! I ended up socialising a lot too and selling a few zines (cheers ladies), but i did get my skate on landing two good early grabs during my run. That was about it for me though...all the other gals killed it, including Cornwall lass Stef Nurding, fashionista Sam Bruce, Vans extraordinaire Helena Long, Rogue's Georgie and her amazing kickflips over the hip and Helen Lovelee's siiiiick old school style. Winners were Lucy Adams (1st), Lois Pendlebury (2nd), Dani Mellor (3rd), Emma Richardson (4th) and Helen Lovelee (5th). Well done to everyone who came and skated, it was reet fun!
